The result of the debate was - moved to Wikipedia namespace
Belongs in Wikipedia: namespace. Fredrik | talk 17:55, 23 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Agreed, move or delete or something, and also List of Perl programs, List of articles with C programs, and List of Java-programs. --Yath 18:44, 23 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Delete. Another useless list. Concur with Yath that other such lists should be deleted. Should we VfD the whole lot? --Improv 15:47, 24 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Hmm. I think these lists will be useful for people wanting to learn about specific programming languages, by looking at bits of code that do interesting things. The problem I see is that these lists are probably incomplete and out of date at all times. A category system *might* work better. Keep these lists until someone comes up with a better way to identify the same content (i.e., articles with code in them). Wile E. Heresiarch 04:58, 25 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- I believe it's planned to convert all existing code examples that don't need to be in a specific language to "Wikicode". Maybe these lists could be moved to the Wikicode to-do list Fredrik | talk 13:02, 25 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- "Planned" is the wrong word. "Wishful thinking" on the part of the one or two authors of Wikicode is more accurate. Converting existing code samples to an idiosyncratic unexecutable language would be waste of time, and more seriously, it would be a mistake. See Wikipedia talk:Wikicode/Specification for discussion. Vote unchanged. Wile E. Heresiarch 14:55, 25 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Existing code examples should almost never be converted to Wikicode unless it's a really big improvement over the existing version. It does not apply to most of the articles in this list. This has been a point of some contention. Derrick Coetzee 19:32, 4 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- Why don't the people go to Freshmeat if they want that kind of thing? That's the whole reason Freshmeat exists -- to be an application directory. Wikipedia shouldn't try to duplicate that functionality. --Improv 19:14, 26 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Well, the programs which exist in Wikipedia are solely to illustrate one idea or another. Programs listed at Freshmeat are applications -- typically there is a bit of interesting code wrapped in an enormous pile of stuff to handle i/o, gui, etc. If someone wants to see examples of how programs can solve interesting problems, WP is more focused than FM. Programs as they exist in WP aren't applications, so there's no danger of WP turning into an application directory. Fwiw, Wile E. Heresiarch 00:00, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- You appear to be correct, although I still feel that this is a worthless list, like most lists here. --Improv 04:33, 30 Sep 2004 (UTC)

- Keep. This is a useful way of organising this information. Jamesday 17:22, 1 Oct 2004 (UTC)
