- 1850 – Jule Murat Hannaford, president of Northern Pacific Railway 1913-1920, is born (d. 1934)[1][2][3]
- 1850 – Farmers around Detroit, Michigan, burn down the Michigan Central Railroad's freight house in Detroit; the farmers were angry at the railroad's policy regarding not reimbursing them for livestock killed by trains when the stock wandered onto the tracks.[4]
- 1956 – Japan Railways completes electrification of the Tōkaidō Main Line (pictured), connecting Tokyo Station and Kōbe Station, for both freight and passenger service.
- 2001 – The Surface Transportation Board releases the final Environmental Impact Statement on Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad's plan to expand into Wyoming's Powder River Basin.
