1803 – The Surrey Iron Railway, in the south of London, England, opens.
1881 – Construction crews on the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad's Alpine Tunnel, in Colorado, break through to connect both ends of the tunnel.
1910 – The London and South Western Railway (pictured) introduces new Continental service, Southampton-Havre.
2002 – The German manufacturer of rail equipment, Vossloh, announces the acquisition of the French company Cogifer.
