[edit]

I have reverted to the previous version to restore the vandalism and deleted link to Egale's website 'Book banning in Surrey: what happened'. This website gives James Chamberlain's side of what happened in the book banning case with Surrey School Board while it was chaired by Mary Polak.

If anyone finds a link to Mary Polak's side of this divisive issue, I think it could be added. I seem to remember the media quoting Ms Polak as saying something like " We weren't wrong [to ban the books], we were just found to be wrong" afer the SCC ruled against the school board.

Vandalism, minor changes

[edit]

I have reverted to the previous version, as a few lines were deleted by a non-logged in user, 67.71.186.89.

I then made a few changes:

67.71.186.89 deleted a reference to Ms Polak blaming her loss in the byelection to ethnic voters. I have added a link to the relevant story in a local newspaper printed that week.

67.71.186.89 deleted the adjective 'conservative' describing the BC Liberal Party. I feel it is important for readers to know where the BC Liberal Party fits on the political spectrum, so I have replaced the word 'conservative' with 'right-of-centre' as this is the term used on the BC Liberal Party's page.

67.71.186.89 deleted the adjective 'socially conservative' used to describe the Surrey Electoral Team. It is well known that members of the SET political slate advocate socially conservative values. Most are members of local Evangelical Churches. Most SET Trustees have a history of voting along socially conservative lines.

I changed the reference to Surrey having the highest rate of teen pregnancy in BC. I found statistics from 2002 that Surrey had the highest rate of teen pregnancy in Greater Vancouver, but Langley and Abbotsford had higher rates. As such, I have changed the reference to read "one of the highest rates". If indeed the rate has gone up since 2002, and someone can provide a link to the relevant statistic, then we can change it back.

I deleted the reference to Kareem Allam as Mary's political organizer, as the Kareem Allam page did not survive VFD.
