Rename
[edit]I am to new a member to rename this page. The correct title should be Proprietary Companies.
What I have put down are the most important points. In my jurisdiction the corporations act is fairly light on these forms of corporations.
Proprietorships
[edit]The term 'proprietorship' is, as far as I know, a generic term referring to private ownership. 'Sole proprietorship' is "the oldest, most common, and simplest form of business organization."[1] Why, I wonder, is 'proprietary company', then, used in the manner here, to refer to a country-specific legal status? This is a legal term of art in Australia, which is why it has been used here. I defintiely think the articles should be merged. 199.172.169.7 10:28, 15 March 2007 (UTC) Marcin
I don't come from south Africa but this company type also applies there and the abbreviation pty is common.Sparcosso (talk) 15:42, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

I do come from South Africa and I trained as a Chartered Accountant there and I now live and work as an accountant in Australia. I think that its not quite right that we include the South African conception of a proprietary company in this page. The use of the word "proprietary" is incidental in South Africa, they don't talk of "proprietary" and "public" companies as they do in Australia, they talk of "private" and "public". If we are going to bundle the South African private companies in with this definition, then you have to bundle all private company definitions for all countries into it. not new zealand to have pty ltd moniker...
[edit]despite new zealand being formerly a state from australia, then why the business structure for new zealand company is different? (Eg lacking pty mark).182.253.54.79 (talk) 18:40, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
