Disuse?

[edit]

I seem to remember County Hall lying disused for several years between the abolition of the GLC and its being inhabited. Is this the case? -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 17:09, 10 Jun 2004 (UTC)

From memory, after the ending of the GLC I think ILEA used it (or part) until its abolition some years later, and the buildings were used for other purposes too (occasional conferences and meetings iirc) but there were no major occupants until the acquarium and hotel etc. started plans to convert and move in. It was 'disused' in the sense of 'mostly vacated' but (except for the roundabout block) not un-inhabited or vandalised - type 'empty'. --VampWillow 09:28, 13 Jun 2004 (UTC)

More general use than just London

[edit]

I'm thinking of moving this to County Hall, London or London County Hall. A lot of places use County Hall as the name for their Administrative HQ. Google has about 664,000 hits for "County Hall" -London. --Cavrdg 06:21, 18 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

County Hall Island Block

[edit]

County Hall Island Block or The London Eyesore as it is better known, was demolished to make way for a block of luxury appartments, not a hotel. The appartments are to look out across Westminster Bridge to the iconic Houses of Parliament. The starting price for a one bedroom has been advertised on the site at starting from 195,000 sterling.

Image with London Eye available

[edit]

I passed by this the other day and took a few photos for a panorama showing the London Eye next to the County Hall. You may consider using it. I have noticed that the second image used in the article is now of a historic character as the London Eye is not visible on that one. -- Slaunger (talk) 01:16, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Herbert Morrison book

[edit]

Herbert Morrison 'How London is governed' 1935, 2nd edition 1949 People's Universities Press) has some coverage of County Hall. On p34 (2nd edn) it is noted that one of the corridors is 'well over a furlong (220 yards, just over 201 metres) in length.' Jackiespeel (talk) 17:56, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
