Pronunciation

[edit]

Any help pronouncing his name would be most welcome. Sandover 05:56, 30 Jan 2005 (UTC)

re above: erm...I've tried, someone might want to fit it in a bit better though heh...

Hello, I am from Wexford like Colm and the surname phontically is TOW-BEEN.

Pronunciation in English, the language of the article, would be nice, too.  Я Madler  גם זה יעבור R  17:37, 31 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Colm" is pronounced in two ways in Ireland; the standard way when addressing an English language Colm; then you have people like Tóibín whose first name is the Irish language version, spelled the same but pronounced differently, so his name spelled phonetically is: kullim toe-been. There is a hint of an "h" sound in the last name, if you can manage it: kullim t(h)oe-been, but if you can only manage toe-been, most Irish people won't notice any difference, nor care. If his name was English, he would be called Colm Tobin ("kollim toe-bin"). — O'Dea (talk) 05:47, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Orientation

[edit]

Also, it's probably best to cite some evidence instead of simply declaring his sexuality. (just a suggestion).

Now that plots and theme of the novels are developed evidence has come up. He's been quite open about it, so I think it's ok if that's one out five categories which include nationality and so on. Pold

Cleanup

[edit]

Removed Stub.

Some red links still to be done and a proofreading of the main article and the novels in separate articles. Anyone? --Pold 01:06, 19 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think these three books should have an entry on their own. I remove links. The Kilfenora Teaboy (1997); The Penguin Book of Irish Fiction (1999); and The Modern Library: The 200 Best Novels in English since 1950

Bibliography

[edit]

It'll be easier if someone made a bibliography of all this. Skinnyweed 20:34, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Have commenced tidy-up of the Bibliography section using cite templates and tables for short stories, poems and/or book reviews. Capitalization and punctuation follow standard cataloguing rules in AACR2 and RDA, as much as Wikipedia templates allow it; feel free to continue. Once tidy up is finished, a separate Colm Tóibín bibliography page can be created. Sunwin1960 (talk) 05:45, 8 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

While I would prefer capitalization and punctuation to follow the standard cataloguing rules referred to above, the Wikipedia Manual of Style at WP:MOS requires "title case". I will make changes accordingly. Sunwin1960 (talk) 11:49, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

InfoBox

[edit]

Why has the infobox been removed? 84.203.181.35 13:54, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

infoboxes are pointlesss and unnessary. what did the world loose, exactly. Ceoil 14:06, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If the article wants to qualify for FA status then it`ll need an infobox.Exiledone 20:41, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Wait forgot they weren`t mandatory.Exiledone 20:48, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Colm's father?

[edit]

I was listening to (the terribly anglocentric) Marian Finucane in late 2008 as she interviewed Jim Bolger. Bolger was going on about his childhood and I'm almost certain he said that Nioclás Tóibín taught him in Wexford and that Nioclás was Colm's father. Interview here: http://www.rte.ie/podcasts/2008/pc/pod-v-111008-37m9s-marian.mp3. I surmise that this Nioclás is not the sean nós singer of the same name? 86.44.47.236 (talk) 18:10, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You are mistaken. Ceoil 09:48, 23 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Tóibín identifies his parents as Bríd and Michael Tóibín in an Irish Independent interview. I will add them to the article. — O'Dea (talk) 05:52, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

On Desert Island Discs just now I learnt that his fatehr was a school teacher and his mother a published poet. Usually there is information about parents’ occupations. PhilomenaO'M (talk) 11:35, 3 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Works Section

[edit]

While Sitush's expansion on the works section is admirable it is now almost impossible to get any information out of it at first glance. Should we revert to the previous version or build a table for it? Sometimes Incoherent (talk) 01:09, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Where does he live?

[edit]

The following two statements (Personal life) are inconsistent.

"Since c. 2012, Tóibín has been in a relationship with Hedi El Kholti, an editor of the literary press Semiotext(e). They share a home in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles."

and

"Tóibín lives in Southside Dublin City's Upper Pembroke Street."

He can not live in two places, separated by thousands of miles, simultaneously.
