Hi Hypernovean, I see you changed the external links to "deep link" instead of just linking to the websites themselves.

Are you sure this is a good idea? I could easily believe that these sites could change those paths in a trice leaving the page outdated. That's why I linked to the main page of each site. Zuytdorp Survivor 23:11, 16 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Ok, I changed http://www.street-directory.com.au/aus_new/index.cgi to just http://www.street-directory.com.au/ (they're both the same); however, http://www.ausway.com/ by itself leads to an ugly redirect page/useless intro page, whereas http://www.ausway.com/ausway.html leads straight to the directory listing, which is what people would want to see. I doubt that the page will change anytime soon though, I understand your point. TPK 09:03, 17 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Does anyone know how Ausway create their maps?

[edit]

Does Ausway use satellite photos, aerial photos or do they drive along the roads? I assume it's a combination of all three, but I can't find any information about this. It might be useful to add the answer to the trivia section. 203.12.172.254 02:02, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You might like to email them and ask. In the past I've found them to be very helpful with questions. --Evan C (Talk) 06:54, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Just to comment here, try not to put such information into a trivia section. They are highly discouraged in Wikipedia. Try to incorporate it into the main article if you can. --Lakeyboy 08:20, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
In the past I have emailed or called them, reporting changes in landmarks, resulting in changes in future editions Shelbypark (talk) 05:23, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to know how the page grid is constructed from a cartographic point of view - in particular, how you would convert the Melway page grid to a WGS84 lat,lng grid. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.191.116.29 (talk) 22:42, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have a suspicion that these days they use GPS and all the maps are drawn on computer. Until the 1990s they drew them by hand and when they first started they drew them by hand in the backyard! You could probably ring them and they'd be happy to tell you. Nick carson (talk) 05:56, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
On the Ausway website, it states that Ausway's researchers revise the map data by "visiting all areas of our coverage to give the reader a feel that they're being informed about an area by somebody who knows the area." http://ausway.com/home/Default.aspx?tabid=113&language=en-US —Preceding unsigned comment added by 120.152.181.52 (talk) 11:57, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
For many years, I sent a few pages of corrections each year just from my observations of mistakes of wherever I happened to be at the time. I'm pleased to say that over the years, most of my suggested ammendments were incorporated in the following edition after a personal letter from Iven Mackay thanking me for my consistent contibutions which was followed up by a compementary copy of the next edition when it was published. Shibboleth

[edit]

Does Melway versus Melways rate as a shibboleth ie those in the mapping / road industry versus the average car driver? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.191.115.238 (talk) 08:02, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I wouldn't think so. I, and others I know, have always referred to it as Melway since getting our first copy back in the late '60s. Supt. of Printing (talk) 11:16, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Melway Cover

[edit]

Can we please have a cover image of Melway 37? 120.155.39.4 (talk) 00:35, 28 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Expansion into other markets

[edit]

I have removed the references to Ballarat (Victoria), as there is no Melway directory of this city. Melway don't list it as a product on their website, and the "omnipresent" directory in Ballarat is a Melway-STYLE directory made by a Warrnambool firm called Drury. 121.214.54.126 (talk) 23:16, 19 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The 2009 edition (I think) had a bonus Ballarat supplement (Sponsored by Ballarat paint manufacturer, Haymes). Although this is not a regular addition to ongoing editions of Melway, it was nevertheless published by Melway. Supt. of Printing (talk) 11:13, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm. Interesting. I'm not familiar with that feature. (I probably skipped the 2009 edition; it's expensive to buy every year.) But you'd agree this doesn't negate my edit, I presume? Most Ballarat residents don't actually use or even encounter the Melway (of any edition) unless they have to travel to Melbourne or Geelong regularly. 58.166.253.130 (talk) 07:48, 25 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have a copy of the Haymes Paint Ballarat Special Edition Melway right here next to me. Inside it says it is a first edition, published in October 2008 by

Melway Publishing Pty Ltd 32 Ricketts Road Mount Waverley 3149

I bought it 10 days ago (roughly 16 May 2012) at a service station on the Western Highway in Warrenheip, just east of Ballarat. It is a thin (~20 pages), A4-sized document, folded and stapled.

I spent a few minutes trying to find a web page for it, but couldn't find it on the Melways site or the Haymes Paint site. It is, like all Melways, a work of informational art, and I, like all Melways fanatics, have already found an error.

CactusPolecat (talk) 00:47, 26 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A real Melway fanatic would not put an "s" on the end of the name. HiLo48 (talk) 01:39, 26 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I love the 's' - it's not correct, but it is the common, colloquial form.

By the way, I just reinstated the Ballarat directory to the list of other markets. CactusPolecat (talk) 03:33, 30 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Printed where

[edit]
