The rules

[edit]
  • Articles noted must be related to rail transport.
  • The fact noted must be mentioned in the subject article.
  • At least one fact in the template at any time needs an associated image; more facts may have images, but only one should be displayed in the template to keep it from looking too cluttered. Also note that because the image display is limited in width, vertical format images will appear to display larger than horizontal format images and will be easier to see.
  • The template can be updated at any time, but please note the date that facts were added and give each fact at least two days on the template (longer than two days is fine, but don't let it go too long between updates).
  • When adding new facts to the template, put the date that the fact was added into an HTML comment so other editors know which facts are oldest.
  • The subject of the article noted in the DYK fact is listed in boldface type.
  • The section should have a minimum of three and maximum of five facts (but it is normally edited to four facts).
  • The newest facts in the template should be listed at the top.
  • Before suggesting a fact for inclusion, please check the article's talk page and the DYK archive page to see if it or another fact from the same article has already appeared in this section; try to avoid repeating facts and articles here. Another quick way to determine if an article has been used is to check the article's "What links here" page.

Previously featured facts are listed on the archive page.

Note: Although repeat uses for an article have been made in the past when the interesting fact is different and the use is separated by a period of at least one year, there are so many rail-related articles that it is not necessary to repeat an article's appearance in this section. Please check if the article has appeared in this section before. If it has, consider suggesting a fact from one of the numerous unassessed articles instead.

Did you know...

  • ...that the Conway Scenic Railroad has moved only 1 car of revenue freight (an electrical transformer) in its entire history? Trainsandotherthings (talk) 22:43, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
A good one to use, but I now try to avoid highlighting articles that have maintenance banners at the top. Let's fill in some more citations first; I'll see what I can find this week from my resources. Slambo (Speak) 13:35, 3 October 2021 (UTC)
I will work to improve citations in the next few days as well. Trainsandotherthings (talk) 14:13, 3 October 2021 (UTC)
Oof! I just noticed the kerfuffle that was going on over on that article this week. I haven't had a chance to really work on it yet, but I'm glad I hadn't jumped into the middle of that. I was planning to search through my personal reference library as well as a few other online sources for more information and references. Equipment rosters aren't as encyclopedic as historical information; some is warranted, but we don't need to track every detail. Slambo (Speak) 14:25, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
Yeah, unfortunately there's been substantial disruption on that page (one user used sleeper accounts to edit war), so this nomination may need to be put on hold for a later date when the page is stable. I've added a new candidate below instead for now. Trainsandotherthings (talk) 18:18, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

For a later date

The following suggestions may not be appropriate due to recent news events. Either the fact was recently listed on the Main page's Did you know section, it is noted in current news or it is still too soon after the event occurred to list the fact in the DYK section as well. Suggestions might also be listed here for articles that are exceptionally short (i.e. stubs that consist of only a couple sentences and no image or references).
