- 1852 – The first revenue train operates over the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad, an early predecessor of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, pulled by a 4-4-0 steam locomotive named Rocket.[1]
- 1872 – Shimbashi Teishajō, the original terminus of Japan's first railway, opens.
- 1882 – The first dining car in Europe is operated by Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits on a train between Paris and Vienna.
- 1919 – Anatole Mallet, inventor of the mallet locomotive type (pictured), dies (b. 1837).
