Early American Imports of Madeira

[edit]

Agne, I'm sure you know better than I when it comes to wine history, but we need to cite a verifiable source to include this sentence. The articles currently linked don't mention American viticulture at all. Thanks! Csrwizard (talk) 21:42, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Aging

[edit]

Does Madeira continue to age once its bottled?

Yes, but it takes on a different characteristic than aging in the cask. Shiggity (talk) 23:37, 15 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Grape variatal

[edit]

Attempted to expand on the confusion of labeling of wiens by grape varietal. Veniceslug1 21:11, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rainwater

[edit]

I am in possession of a bottle of "Rainwater" Madeira. What does this mean? This information should be added to the article. Badagnani 04:05, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Still trying to find this information. Badagnani 23:54, 13 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Info on Rainwater now added. Tomas e (talk) 22:40, 6 January 2008 (UTC)Rainwater is a gentleMadeira that prepares one for the delights of the older, more nuanced wines.[reply]

EU naming convention

[edit]

Like port, sherry, champagne, parmesan cheese, etc is there a rule in the EU that only madeira wine produced in the island of madeira can bear the name 'madeira'? if so, this should be put in the article as it is for the other items. Utopial (talk) 15:56, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

done myself Utopial (talk) 09:52, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

funny enough, in sanskrit madira means wine, we know that name from thousands of years — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.114.180.178 (talk) 03:24, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Flanders and Swann

[edit]

Madeira is celebrated in a faux-Edwardian song of that title by Flanders and Swann. Would it be appropriate to include an "in popular culture" section to mention this? Alan Canon (talk) 22:51, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oldest Madeira?

[edit]

Yeah, I've had that 1795 Herbfarm Madeira too, but rarewineco [1] has a 1780 Borges Bual Madeira, as does Plume at the Jefferson Hotel Restaurant [2]

Do you have a source that the 1795 is oldest, other than the Herbfarm itself? Shiggity (talk) 10:22, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Got no feedback on this, so I updated, added a reference, and made the statement a more objective and verifiable one ("xxx is known to exist" instead of "the oldest known wine is xxx"). Shiggity (talk) 23:36, 15 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As of April 15, 2013, the oldest Medeira listed for sale Rare Wine Company's website is a 1720 Borges Pather Madeira.[3] Also, the Bloomberg article cited for the 1715 Terrantez being the oldest bottle to hit the market does not mention a 1715 Terrantez. The oldest bottle mentioned in the article is 1780 Borges Bual Madeira, and the oldest Terrantez is mentioned is a 1795 Barbeito Terrantez.[4] Instead of: "Vintages dating back to 1780 are known to exist. The oldest bottle that has come onto the market is a 1715 Terrantez.", perhaps it would be better to say something like: "Bottles dating back to the early 1700s occasionally come onto the market." I'm not quite sure how to source that, though. Jagcowan (talk) 19:06, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Reason for Import

[edit]

The article currently states "No wine-quality grapes could be grown among the 13 colonies". Not true, since Scuppernong grapes, native to North America, grow well here and make excellent, sweet wine. According to the Wikipedia article for Scuppernong, these grapes were found in 1755, so perhaps they just weren't being widely cultivated by the incident in 1768. To say that wine-quality grapes can't be grown (or couldn't be grown in 1768) in any of the original 13 colonies is misleading. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 132.189.76.43 (talk) 20:02, 16 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:Madeira wine/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

This article's history seems at odds with other histories of Madeira wine e.g madeirawines.com. and the British influence. 84.67.140.155 (talk) 00:49, 17 January 2009 (UTC)Bob[reply]

Happy discovery after returned shipment

[edit]

Unless we are told which unsold shipment it was that came back tasting so good, in which specific year, backed up by reports that were written only a few days or weeks after it happened (not years later), there's no reason for anyone to believe that any of it happened. "Accidental discovery" stories for food and drink are very common, and are almost always false. TooManyFingers (talk) 01:03, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
