Untitled old thread

[edit]

Billie Sol Estes is a convicted swindler who did great damage to many banks and individual investors (not to mention US taxpayers) during the early sixties. He always had a flair for publicity and self-promotion, and did attempt to purchase political influence through campaign contributions to LBJ but there is zero evidence of bribery or that LBJ was involved in any conspiracy to murder witnesses in the Estes trial. I've rewritten the article (and did some additional research) to place its focus on the documented record. Wyss 83.115.7.118 01:47, 29 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Merge "Billy" Sol Estes

[edit]

Yep. (Billie is the correct spelling) However, some of the information in the Billy version is both incorrect and unencyclopedic, I'll fix that. Wyss 14:28, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Suspicious deaths

[edit]

This paragraph: "On June 3, 1961, Estes' local contact at the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, Henry Marshall, was found dead in his car with five gunshot wounds on a remote part of his own ranch. Justice of the Peace Lee Farmer attributed Marshall's death to carbon monoxide poisoning brought about from a hose attached to the exhaust pipe of his car." has a number of discrepancies relatively to the account in Time magazine [[1]]:

- Henry Marshall was investigating Estes, he was not his "contact";

- The cause of death was attributed to the gun wounds (which were initially ruled to be self-inflected), not carbon monoxide. The carbon monoxide was found in the later autopsy.

It seems that there was here a mix-up between the two deaths (Henry Marshall and Estes' accountant, George Krutilek). Rps (talk) 11:35, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Who what?

[edit]

There's no way of telling from this article what he did to get himself in trouble. Yes, the conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court; this does not mean we should not at least try to explain why anyone cares or cared about Billie Sol Estes at all. --jpgordon::==( o ) 15:47, 11 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

My fault; I cut out a bunch of unacceptably-sourced material and couldn't figure out how to bridge it, but it wasn't acceptable to leave the material in, either. I'll look for a source for the original conviction and add that material back in, but impeccable sourcing is needed to prevent the article going back to its former condition. Sounds good. --Tom (talk) 16:04, 11 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've added back a description of the actions he was actually convicted for, based on the Time article that was already here - an excellent source, by the way, for anyone who wants to expand this article - plus a People article that just notes he was convicted. Hope this helps. Gavia immer (talk) 16:43, 11 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This article does not mention the 1984 Billie Sol Este's testimony in front of a Grand Jury. He stated there were 8 murders perpetrated on the part of Lyndon Johnson, including his own sister. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.206.254.93 (talk) 08:33, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Birthplace

[edit]

Estes' birthplace is uncertain. Some sources give it as Abilene, in central Texas, while others say he was born in the Texas Panhandle in 1925 and reared in Abilene. — QuicksilverT @ 04:28, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong photo of Billie Sol Estes

[edit]

the photo is of orville freeman. He was secretary of agriculture at the time. Bille Sol had similar glasses and hair but the photo shown is not of him 2600:6C46:6000:59F5:D451:30E3:9592:54D2 (talk) 16:38, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Absolutely true; it's Orville Freeman. But the Freeman photo persists atop the Estes bio. Why has this not been corrected in the two months or more since it was noted? 108.48.200.61 (talk) 05:50, 12 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
