- 1884 – Henry C. Lord, president of Indianapolis and Cincinnati Railroad in the 1850s, president of Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway 1868-1869, founding president of Indianapolis Belt Railroad in 1873, dies (b. 1824).
- 1985 – Richard Beeching, chairman of the British Railways Board 1961-1965, dies (b. 1913).
- 2005 – Spokespeople for JR-Tokai in Japan announce that Series 300 Shinkansen (pictured) trains have been operating with faulty speed control equipment; the problem is detected after an engineer reports that he needed to manually reduce a train's speed after the Automatic Train Control (ATC) device installed on the train failed to operate. The trains are pulled from service until repairs can be made.
